School Run (2007/8)

School Run (25.01.08)
During the autumn of 2007, I felt the need to make work on a daily basis, literally to “practice” every day, even for a short amount of time, and regardless of the product.
My practice had
recently become more concerned with movement and ways of recording it.
I decided to work
with a journey I had to make every day: taking my children to school. In
November 2007 I started the School Run Project, by setting myself the task of
producing one drawing a day, of the route we had taken to school on that day,
depending on whether we had made the journey by car, on foot or by bicycle. The
purpose of this was the exercise of drawing the line that traced a movement.
The result is a
series of drawings, and it has become evident that more or less the same route
can look quite different in every drawing.
Looking at the work of Japanese artist On Kawara (‘I Went’, ‘I Met’ & ‘Date Paintings’), I can relate to the way of establishing rules for his work, and the sense of conscientiousness and obsession with which the work is carried out. Mary Kelly and Francis Alys have also been influential artists.
